Chennai formerly known as Madras, the capital of Tamil Nadu is the sixth most populous city in India with 4.68 million residents as of 2011. This laid the foundation for the present water supply system.

Coastal Salinity Prevention Cell (CSPC) is a joint initiative of Aga Khan Rural Support Programme (India), Ambuja Cement Foundation and Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT).
