Bangalore’s garbage crisis grows in heaps and mounds

The city is drowning in its own waste with garbage trucks regularly lined up for hours, their burdens putrefying in the afternoon sun. Some neighborhoods have not had trash pickups for nearly three weeks, and vast mounds of garbage are scattered through out the city.

As I get down from the auto that I hired for the day to take me from my hotel in Wardha to Mahatma Gandhi's ashram where he spent the last days of his life, I wasn't quite prepared for what lay ahead of me and the feelings that would hit me from then on.

October 3 – Making our way into the ground, we saw an all-night effort of the workers on site. The venue was prepped-up, workers were busy putting finishing touches – wiping the chairs of excess water, laying carpets on the ground, hanging fluorescent balloons in bunches on poles, near stalls and game pens.

September 30th - The skies poured out the day we were to leave for Nagpur. The morning shower felt like a blessing. Thankful, but sceptical of the weather, our biggest concern was whether the rains would follow us. In Nagpur, the moment we stepped out the heat hit us. Clear skies welcomed us and for that we were grateful.
