The ‘Workshop on Environmental Flows’ was organized by Aaranyak and River Research Center (Kerala) and supported by International Rivers, on 6th of May 2012.

Around 250 delegates from eleven hill states of India along with representatives from Darjeeling hills participated in the two days summit. It was organized by Ecotourism and Conservation Society of Sikkim (ECOSS) jointly with Central Himalayan Environment Association (CHEA).

A short film by TERI - “Water ignites life and hope” was also shown.

Farmers near the small town of Vijayapura are faced with a decline and disappearance of groundwater. Bore-wells as deep as 1100 feet have gone dry. Apart from the great loss in money that they face they also have no livelihoods to eke out a living. Some innovative farmers have started to use the towns waste-water to grow fooder and even vegetables.

If a new report is to be believed, no city in India has recognized the role of informal sector in recycling waste and that waste itself can be a tool to alleviate poverty.
