It was the kick-off event of an ambitious project to find solutions to the groundwater crisis in Gujarat, funded by the PepsiCo Foundation. More details of the project will follow this overview post.

How SGWISS could support the Rainwater Harvesting? 

The main source of sweet water is Rain, but the water available from the rain is not regular and uniformly spread throughout year. So the rainwater could be stored by any method in rain. When the rainwater is stored on the surface but there would not be sufficient capacities of structures developed for the rainwater harvesting. Little quantity of the rainwater is recharged in the subsurface and underground.

Dr Rupela in his keynote address to the organic farming association of India does mention SRI along with several other desirable practices for a 'cool' or climate friendly agriculture. Some of us met him recently at the national workshop. Let us hope this article and his work will inspire many more researchers to work closely with farmers on sustainable agriculture.

In this press release dated 4th June 2010, the Paryavaran Suraksha Samiti expresses concern that the effluent treatment facilities across the Golden Corridor do not conform to the Gujarat State Pollution Control Board  (GPCB) and demands that effluent discharge at Tadgam Sarigam Pipeline, from FETP, Ankleshwar, ECP, Vadodara and CETPs of Ahmedabad be stopped.

The sanitation systems studied are spread across the country. The study goes to Pratapnagar in Bihar to evaluate the success of the septic tank to Asalthpur in Uttar Pradesh to study the Ecosan (UDDT) toilet. Other locations in India include Maharashtra, Gujarat, Kerala.

"Cool Farming for a Hot Planet"

Description:

The Organic Farming Association of India (OFAI) organises its convention of organic farmers every two years in a different State. This year’s convention is scheduled to be held near Anand, Gujarat. Earlier conventions were held in Wardha (Maharashtra) in 2006 and Trichy (Tamilnadu) in 2008.

The Gujarat integrated township policy by the Gujarat Urban Development Company (GUDC) (Government of Gujarat) has been designed towards promoting the development of townships with high quality built in environments and services with reliable infrastructure.  This has been done by the Gujarat government with the aim of attracting investments in knowledge based activities and businesses, especially IT based businesses, in a manner that directly benefits the youth of the state. The infrastructure is planned to be zero impact in terms of waste management and self sufficient in terms of facilities for education, health and other aspects of social welfare

It is proposed that the development of integrated townships be done through private, market initiatives. The Government’s role will be to support and facilitate the market operations and regulating it only to the extent required to realise public policy objectives. The proposed ‘Township Policy’ aims to provide a framework for ensuring that this happens in an efficient manner in predefined areas for township development.

The study by Carewater INREM Foundation explores the rise of Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants since 1970s as a cottage industry for providing fluoride free water supply in North Gujarat.
