In Memoriam: A Tribute to Our Dear Friend Latha Anantha
The passing of Latha Anantha, a true crusader and champion for rivers, leaves a void in the water sector. The Forum for Policy Dialogue on Water Conflicts in India pays tribute to her. Posted on 18 Nov, 2017 07:23 PM

Latha, well known environmental activist and researcher from Kerala, is no more with us physically. Though many of us knew that she was battling with cancer for the last 3-4 years, closely following her ups and downs and also knowing that over the last two weeks or so her health was steadily deteriorating, the question still comes up time and again, why was she taken away from us so early?

Minimising bycatch
Bycatch during trawling not only harms the environment but causes huge economic loss also. A video tells us why it is important to address this issue. Posted on 09 Aug, 2017 01:46 PM

Fishing trawlers symbolise industrial-scale fishing which is lucrative in the present day market. These machines that catch fish in huge numbers are said to be a boon to the sector’s economy but a closer look at the figures show that these modes of mass fishing may not be as efficient as they may seem to appear.

Saving Sangam from mining
With enough legal evidence of the violation in hand and clearly articulated demands supported by law, a group of people saves the Triveni Sangam from sand mining. Posted on 18 Jun, 2017 09:00 PM

There was illegal mining in the Triveni Sangam and I could not believe my eyes. Who could do something like this? The sangam or confluence has a special place in my mind as I had grown up visiting this place regularly since childhood. Many families like mine have spent long hours in the area during festivals and recreational trips.

Lippa is a small village in the Kinnaur region in Himachal Pradesh, close to Asrang wildlife sanctuary. On May 27, the village witnessed hectic activity as the gram sabha was to decide the fate of a hydroelectricity project to be constructed near the village. The project demands the water from the Kerang stream be diverted for power.

People believe that tunnels such as these cause irreversible damages to the environment.
