The report presents the hydrologic information and news available from print media and various government agencies mostly for the year 1996-97 compiled state-wise and problem-wise for the whole country.
The hydrologic events that were occurring across the length and breadth of the country are the manifestation of the hydrologic problems and there is a need for awareness on these. The major hydrological problems of India have been divided into twenty sub-sections and arranged both state-wise and river-basin wise. The news about the Narmada basin and North-east region have been incorporated in N and O sections separately.
The Section V caters to general hydrological information for the country. Further, for the convenience of the readers a matrix is provided amongst the problems and the position index of the contents provided with respect to the problem in the report. Also, Table 2 serves as a matrix to indicate the river basin where the different problems have occurred.
For proper utilization and management of water resources in the country, it is necessary to have sound information about available water resources. The report is an attempt to put forth diverse hydrologic information and events reflecting the problems and indicate solutions for hydrologists, planners and water resource managers in particular.
