The interstate dispute between Odisha and Chhattisgarh over the Mahanadi's water is an ongoing one and it looks like both the state governments have no interest in finding a long-term solution.

It all started with the Chhattisgarh government constructing six barrages on the upstream of the Mahanadi for using its water for industrial use. The Odisha government opposed the move but Chhattisgarh went ahead with the project implementation. Caught between this tussle, it's the people of both the states who suffer.

With the Assembly elections in both the states nearing, the Odisha government demanded to constitute a Mahanadi Tribunal. Due to the delay in getting a response from the Central government, the Odisha government moved the Supreme Court. Consequently, the apex court, in January 2018, ordered the central government to set up the Mahanadi Tribunal.

This video provides a brief insight into this water conflict.
