For the last 2 decades Samaj Pragati Sahayog (SPS) has implemented watershed management projects in an attempt to integrate regeneration of natural resources with livelihood security of the poor
SPS has recently completed production of two films, which are now available for purchase.
- Watershed Interventions – Basic Principles (English)
This film presents the basic principles of watershed management in a manner that is both accessible and appealing for practitioners, as well as the lay audience. - Hamari Apni Doodh Dairy ‘Our Own Milk Dairy’ (Nimari with English Subtitles)
The film narrates the story of how watershed works in a dryland area have opened up possibilities of a new livelihood option for the local tribal community. Dairying as a source of livelihood was for long considered unviable in dryland tribal areas. Apart from the problem of fodder and frequent seasonal out-migration, lack of veterinary services and market access were major reasons that rendered dairying activity unviable. But once water became available following the watershed work done by Samaj Pragati Sahayog (SPS) in partnership with the local tribal communities, land became productive and the farmers did not have to migrate elsewhere in search of employment. As a result, keeping livestock for producing milk became possible.
The women then organized themselves in community-based dairy co-operatives and stepped up production of milk, the veterinary support and market link for which was established through SPS efforts. The film narrates the story of how the initial skepticism over viability of dairying in the minds of people was overcome, leading to a full-fledged livelihood option for tribal communities of the area.
