Augmentation of surface water by ground water from unconfined aquifers (open wells) and fixing mini filter plants and dozing systems for the supply of potable water to Belgaum city- A power point presentation by R.S.Naik

This power point presentation is about a project carried out by Belgaum City Corporation,  that aims to utilise ground water from open well to augment surface water supply. The presentation starts with a brief history on the need for open well project spearheaded by the corporation, following, which it sheds light on, how local initiative of like minded localities helped transform the water service delivery and benefit tier II city. This local initiative has helped rejuvenate the ancient and perennial source of water.

The project has ensured that there is effective participation of various groups of people. It involved and consulted senior citizens of the city to know about the alternate source of water. This had led to the identification of old and high yielding open wells, cleaning the wells and testing the yield and water quality. Community, social organisations, private entrepreneurs and donors were also involved at different levels to execute the project.

The presentation then goes on to list  the various high yielding wells and small open wells around the city. It provides a brief description of history of open wells in Belgaum. Following, which the author, uses pictures to show how the project was carried out.

The significance of the project in the broad framework of water sustainability, stakeholder participation, the economics of the project and media coverage (in English, Kannada and Marathi language) on this successful endeavour by like minded people are some of the other aspects that have been highlighted in the presentation.
