The Makhala village is located in the Amravati district in the southwestern Satpura mountain ranges. Situated at 959 m above mean sea level, this Maharashtra village has 352 households with a population of 1045. Although accessible by road in all seasons, the village is isolated and surrounded by forests. The nearest village is Semadoh at a distance of 12 km.

This paper presents the results of forty groundwater samples collected from June 2007 to July 2010 in Gambhira and Baheria villages in Madhya Pradesh. The authors conclude that the ground water quality is degraded due to anthropogenic causes.

Sir Ratan Tata Trust and Navajbai Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT-NRTT) initiated the comprehensive livelihood focused ‘Sukhi Baliraja Initiative (SBI)’ to address and alleviate farmers’ distress.
