Query:
From Vijay Krishna, India Water Portal, Bangalore
Posted 16 July 2008
I am Vijay Krishna, manager of India Water Portal, http://www.indiawaterportal.org, a website dedicated to water issues. India Water Portal is an open collaborative platform for compiling and sharing knowledge on the water sector and for dialogue. The Water Portal is supported and maintained by Arghyam, http://www.arghyam.org, a trust based in Bangalore and focussed on water issues.
The Water Portal frequently receives questions on water problems from NGOs and citizens; to help answer these concerns has implemented a “question-answer service.” Many questions that come to us are on water quality, a reflection of the increasing number of water quality issues being seen around the country (for example http://www.indiawaterportal.org/Network/askq/kb/?CategoryID=14).
In most cases, the first step in addressing the problem is to get the water tested and find out the specific contaminants. We have therefore seen the need for a comprehensive listing of good water quality testing labs across the country. A beginning has been made here:
http://www.indiawaterportal.org/blog/index.php/2008/05/20/water-testing-labs-information-required/, but much more information is required.
We therefore request members to provide information on the following:
Names and contact numbers of known and reputed water quality testing labs from across the country
Names and contact details of hydrogeologists or firms that will do hydrogeological studies for people to understand the nature of groundwater in their area, usually relating to help with borewells
Other resource lists that the Portal is compiling are as follows:
Water Quality Field Testing Kits: http://www.indiawaterportal.org/data/kits/
We request additions to these resource lists for use by the broader community and public and also welcome any further ideas/recommendations for taking this effort forward.
Such resource listings will help the Water Portal to respond more effectively to people's requests for help, and will be a resource for use for all community members. Coupled with good information on water quality standards, filtration methods etc., it will empower more citizens to understand their water quality problems, create effective coping strategies and be part of a broader, sustainable solution.
Responses were received, with thanks, from
1. Arunabha Majumder, Jadavpur University, Kolkata
2. Yusuf Kabir, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Consultant, Kolkata
3. Sajitha Joshy, Water and Sanitation Management Organisation (WASMO), Ahmedabad
4. J. Saravanan, Dhan Foundation, Chennai
5. Vijay Kumar, Chartered Environmental and Water Resources Exploration and Development Associates, New Delhi
6. Sujit G. Kumar, Coastal Salinity Prevention Cell, Ahmedabad
7. P. S. Harikumar, Centre for Water Resources Development and Management, Calicut
8. Georgekutty Joseph, Socio Economic Unit Foundation (SEUF), Kerala
9. Nupur Bose, A.N. College, Patna

Summary of Responses
Water quality testing is a critical input for maintaining the supply of drinking quality water, but is often overlooked in the rush to supply drinking water. Water has to be checked at multiple places along the supply route as it has been found the maximum contamination takes place inside consumers’ households, or in the pipelines; water leaving the treatment plants usually meets national and international standards for chemical and bacterial purity.
In their responses to the query, members provided the names of several organizations across India, some regional and others national, who work on water quality testing. These organizations include NGOs, government laboratories and private companies. Several international organizations and organs of the United Nations are also involved in water quality testing.
The World Health Organization has compiled a directory of water testing laboratories in India, along with the National Environment Engineering Research Institute, in 2007.
The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) has a team of experts based in Delhi and its other offices working on water quality and hydrogeology. TERI has also developed its own field water quality testing kit. Chartered Environmental & Water Resources Exploration and Development Associates, New Delhi, is a company specialized in hydro-geology.
Members provided details of several water quality laboratories in different parts of India. In Gujarat, the Vikram Sarabhai Centre for Development Interaction (VikSat) in Ahmedabad works on rural water supply and related areas. The Gujarat Jalsewa Training Institute has developed modules for water quality testing, and also has testing facilities. The institute is a lead implementing agency for the Water and Sanitation Monitoring Organization, Gujarat. The Aga Khan Rural Support Programme (India) has a full-fledged water-testing laboratory in Surendranagar.
In south India, the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board has a network of laboratories, while the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board has another network of laboratories. In Kerala, the Central Water Analysis Laboratory, Kozhikode, is equipped to check both drinking water and industrial effluents. The Socio Economic Unit Foundation, Allapuzha, has a water quality testing laboratory.
In east India, A N College, Patna, Bihar, has an advanced laboratory for testing water quality. AFPRO, Orissa, has both trained personnel and equipment for water quality testing and hydrogeology. It has nine field units all over India.
Given that the discussion did not touch upon possible new initiatives for IWP to take up in an effort to improve information on water quality standards, filtration methods, etc., it may be constructive to revisit this topic in the future.

Water related issues specifically on resource availability, quality and governance has been the centre of concern across different hydrogeological regime engulfing the rural and urban populations across India. Recognizing the importance of this valuable natural resource, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) has dedicated a team of experts to investigate and provide solutions for water related issues while conducting research in water sector under its Water Resources Division.
The division under the group "Water Resources Policy and Management" (WRPM) (amongst several other focus areas) undertakes hydrogeological and water quality studies besides having a full-fledged Water laboratory that is ISO 9001: 2000 certified and equipped with state-of-the-art instruments. TERI has also developed its own "Water testing field kit" that gives an opportunity to evaluate water quality on the spot, help in decision making for water usage and is beneficial for a wide user group including rural communities, NGOs, students and public authorities.
The links below provide details of water testing field kit & water laboratory at TERI. Any queries and information are welcome at the under mentioned contact details.
