The Government of Jammu and Kashmir has released the draft version of the state's hydel policy in June 2010. The policy has been drafted by the Jammu & Kashmir State Power Development Corporation Limited (JKPDCL) and is available on their website here.
Hydropower is one of the J&K’s key resources and the state government intends to accelerate harnessing this potential as an integral part of its economic development. Even though the state is yet to achieve self-sufficiency in meeting its own requirement, there is an urgent need to develop its huge untapped hydro-potential expeditiously and in an efficient manner. The State is endowed with a hydro power potential of 20,000 MWS out of which a mere 11.68 % i.e. 2336.20 MWs has been harnessed so far. The proposed policy thus places a strong thrust on development of new and existing hydro power projects in the State.
