Has any work been done on removing antibiotics from river water using genetically modified algae - How can we get clean water?

Dear Sir/Madam,

I'm a graduate student at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio and have enrolled in a sustainability class. As part of our project we are evaluating the use of genetically modified algae to absorb antibiotics from a water supply like a river.

We need your help to determine if any work has been done in this space already and what methods are currently used to get water clean.
