Questions on water usage in McLeod Ganj, Himachal Pradesh

Dear Team at India Water Portal,

While researching situation on water quality in India, I recently stumbled upon your website. This is a great work you are doing here, thank you for all of your noble efforts!

I am writing to you from Belgrade, Serbia. Namely, in February 2015. I am coming to McLeod Ganj, Himachal Pradesh to teach English to local people. I will be staying there for something more than four months. I am very interested in data on water in that particular state and town, if you have any.

My main concern in the usage of tap water and the choice of drinking water. I am aware of the fact that in most cases, tap water is not safe to drink, so a bunch of questions comes into play.

  • Is the tap water there safe to use for personal hygiene, and if so, should I not allow it to go into my mouth and nose while taking a shower?
  • Should I sterilize my hands after washing them with soap and tap water?
  • Is the tap water safe to drink after being boiled in a kettle?
  • What would be your choice of safe bottled water? (some internet sites quote some of the local Indian bottled water brands being just a bottled tap water from big cities and not so safe to drink)
  • Also, I am aware of the fact there are many water-filtering systems that have been installed in McLeod Ganj during the past few years. Would you consider that water to be safe to drink?

I would also like to point out that any additional data on water usage and general health concerns would be of tremendous value to me! Excuse the multiple questions, but it's really the only way for me to ask about all of the concerns I had in mind.

Many thanks for your response!!

Warmest regards,

Matt Belgrade, Serbia
