ICIMOD is a regional knowledge development and learning centre. We are working to develop an economically and environmentally sound mountain ecosystem to improve the living standards of mountain populations – now, and for the future. In line with its current Strategic Framework, ICIMOD is strengthening its capacity to develop new approaches to meet the growing challenges in the region posed by climate change and globalisation.

The thrust of ICIMOD programmes are often of transboundary and regional nature, and the specialist shall have a good understanding of the mountain dimension of integrated watershed management as well as the positioning of this work in a global context.

In fostering integrated watershed management work within ICIMOD, take particular consideration to marginalized and vulnerable groups as well as mainstreaming gender and climate perspective. Without neglecting the importance of ‘technical’ solutions in the field of integrated watershed management, the specialist shall spearhead ‘social inclusion’ and local livelihood perspective’ in ICIMOD’s watershed management work.

The duty station is Kathmandu; frequent traveling in the region is required.

  • A post-graduate academic degree or equivalent, preferably a PhD, in natural resource management
  • 5 years of work experience in the field of integrated watershed management, natural resources and common property resources management of which part preferably has been gained in the mountain regions
  • Experience in research, and a documented record of publications in the field of natural resources and integrated watershed management is desirable
  • Experience and knowledge in climate change adaptation related project management, monitoring and evaluation systems
  • Experience in transboundary and livelihoods development context will be an added advantage
  • Excellent communication and English-writing skills
  • Ability to prepare climate proofed project proposals, progress reports, skills in project planning, negotiation and assessment
  • Experience in managing and working with multidisciplinary teams, particularly with international/regional agencies which includes sub-national NGOs and CBOs; capacity for intellectual leadership and skill in working with colleagues and collaborators of different national and cultural backgrounds

Duration:

3 years, of which the first six months is on probation, and subject to future funding levels of ICIMOD. Starting date is as early as possible preferably 1 January 2011.
