IIHSUniversity of Minnesota

The Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS) is a national education institution committed to the equitable, sustainable and efficient transformation of Indian settlements

Description:
Social Venture Design – a short course on social entrepreneurship is being organised jointly by Acara and IIHS. The Social Venture Design course provides intensive, hands-on experience with entrepreneurship – particularly examples of social entrepreneurship and leadership in developing solutions to societal and environmental problems. This short course will enable learners to identify core issues and develop or redefine business model components of a proposed solution to an environmental issue.

Topics:
The course is a five day program to help social change makers with an opportunity to refine their plans for overall success of the venture leading to a larger positive impact on the society and environment. It is a practical hands-on opportunity to:

  •    Learn to create and execute successful business models for social ventures
  •    Pitch to a panel of impact investors and incubators at the end of the program

The course will help participants to develop an understanding on core aspects of entrepreneurship and leadership, and how these principles can be applied to solving a social or environmental problem. It will enable them to identify the core problem and to develop and refine business model components of a proposed solution to an environmental/social issue with an ability to communicate effectively. On the last day of the course, the participants will have an opportunity to present their social venture plans to a panel of investors and incubators.  At the end of the course, each student should have:

  • A deeper understanding of social entrepreneurship and how to apply it
  • A clear and executable plan for going forward, matched to resources available
  • A solid and compelling investment proposal
  • An introduction to tools and techniques for program management, design thinking, communication and business models
  • Joint certification from University of Minnesota & IIHS
  • Connections to Mentors, Investors, Incubators and Other entrepreneurs

Eligibility:
Social entrepreneurs, members of socially-oriented organisations, or just people who want to make a difference. Acara-IIHS does not make a distinction about what constitutes a social entrepreneur and instead focuses on creating leaders interested in social change by helping them to view their challenges through the eyes of an entrepreneur. These leaders may be in NGOs, businesses, or any other kind of organisation, but all have the opportunity to be a change leader. Prospective students must have a proposed idea to work on during the course. This idea must be included in the application (What problem are you trying to solve? What is your proposed solution?)
