FERAL is a team working on various aspects of applied research on ecological and environmental issues. Our key areas of work include wildlife conservation, ecological restoration, natural resource management and capacity building in these areas. To provide a base and support for young researchers to follow their research interests and priorities. To impart training in ecological research, field survey techniques and tools. To apply ecological research to solve issues in natural resource management, conservation and advocacy.

Description:
Two Junior Research Fellow (JRF) positions are open for working with FERAL on large mammal surveys in the Shencottah Gap, Kerala-Tamil Nadu border. The work involves implementing a large-scale camera trap survey, targeted at a wide variety of large mammals (elephants and tigers in particular). The areas to be covered lie between Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve in the south and Periyar Tiger Reserve in the north. The position also involves assessing elephant-human conflict in estate areas across seasons. There is a good scope for the JRF's using part of the data collected in this study for the publication of scientific papers.

This is a challenging field position involving intensive data collection. It will involve a lot of walking in difficult terrain. It will also require staying in remote forest camps for long periods of time. Therefore, previous field experience in the Western Ghats is a must, as well as the ability to work independently under tough conditions. A bachelors degree is the minimum educational qualification required, although a masters is an added advantage. Knowledge of Tamil/ Malayalam, as well as driving, would be additional qualifications.

This position is for a period of 9 months, beginning in March 2012. Salary will be paid at JRF rates. Simple food and lodging will be provided on field, as will be medical insurance.
