The combination of climate change and an increasing human population in the Himalayan region in the 21st century is increasing stress on both land and water resources, with a resulting negative impact on hydrology, ecosystems, biodiversity and human populations. Therefore an integral approach to better-manage the Himalayas and its resources is required. The LHI is WWF’s response to this opportunity, by pursuing a vision in which nature and people can co-exist in harmony. It is a vision that includes protecting the region’s extraordinary landscapes and rich biodiversity, whilst also sustainably harnessing the opportunities these unique resources can provide, enabling prosperous lives for the human population and the generations to come.
The LHI Strategy is mobilising decision-makers and major stakeholders in the region, including governments, civil society and companies, to facilitate the transformation of national level achievements into remarkable regional and international successes.
The principle mechanism for delivery is through the implementation of the Framework of Co-operation between the Governments of India, Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh arising from the Bhutan Climate Change Summit held in November 2011 which the LHI facilitated and supported.
