Bharti Integrated Rural Development Society (BIRDS) is a non-profit organization established in 1991 at Nandyal, in Kurnool district of Andhara Pradesh, India. Founded and directed by Paul Raja Rao, BIRDS has grown in the past six years from a grassroots attempt to empower the Dalits and provide a few microfinance loans to groups of women.
BIRDS, with the support of Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations (UN), is implementing a project titled “Reversing environmental degradation and rural poverty through adaptation to climate change in drought stricken areas in South India: A hydrological unit pilot project approach”, referred to as “Strategic Pilot on Adaptation to Climate Change” or SPACC. This is a Medium-sized Project (MSP) financed by The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Trust Fund, being implemented in seven drought prone districts of Andhra Pradesh by a network of non governmental and community based organizations.
For the SPACC Project, BIRDS invites applications from individuals for the following positions:
- Subject Expert – Water Management: will bring in the necessary skills to deal with the impact of climate variability/change on water resources, in the project area. Responsibilities are: Developing a strategy for interventions in Water Sector for project intervention, including climate monitoring and pilot testing of technologies/measures of adaptation to climate variability/change. Qualification in post-graduate in science/engineering in water resources. Knowledge of climate change and its impact on water cycle management is desirable.
- Short-term Consultant – Climate Change Modelling: will bring in the necessary skills required to analyze climate/weather data. The Consultant will be primarily responsible for evolving and implementing a strategy to collect, collate, analyze and interpret the climate data and provide clear understanding of climate variability/change (observed and projected), in general in Andhra Pradesh and in particular in the project area. Qualification in: degree in meteorology/climatology/agriculture engineering or other related sciences. A minimum of 3 years experience in climate modelling is required.
- Short-term Consultant – Institutions and Gender: will bring in the necessary skills to deal with the impact of climate variability/change on rural communities in general and vulnerable groups in particular, in the project area. Qualification in degree in Sociology/Social Work/Anthropology and related social sciences. A minimum of 10 years experience in community mobilization, with a minimum of 5 years in land and water management, preferably with water based institutional development.
