Applications invited for position of Editor, India Water Portal

India Water Portal is an online platform dedicated to water and related issues in India, managed by Arghyam. The position requires the candidate to work from Arghyam’s office in Bangalore.

 

Background

India Water Portal is a digital media platform for resources, working papers, reports, data, stories, news, events, opportunities and discussions on water. IWP was initially primarily aimed at the development sector - government, NGOs, research and academia - when it was started back in 2007. Over the past 2-3 years, the focus has expanded to include the wider public, because water is an inherently local issue that affects or plays a role everywhere, for everyone, in some form or other. The Portal employs various strategies to reach out to different audiences, in an effort to spread awareness on water issues in India.

 

Role and key responsibilities

Working with the team on improving online reach for the Portal, and striving to become a “digital first” platform for water issues in India.

Managing the editorial process for India Water Portal, which involves:

  • Coordinating with a team of 9 people distributed across the country, who report on water and related issues from across the country

  • Maintaining and implementing an editorial calendar

  • Setting deadlines for stories for individual team members

  • Overseeing story pitches and ideas

  • Implementing a supply chain for all content - sourcing, production, packaging and distribution - through the team

  • Training /capacity building of the team to implement this strategy

  • Managing/overseeing the editing of articles for facts, grammar, style and tone of India Water Portal (supervising a copy editor)

  • Ensuring a smooth, quick editorial pipeline

  • Managing the Portal tech platform - implementing/proposing changes to the site to improve reach for the content being put out. This will also involve liaising with the technology partner on a regular basis.

  • Sourcing and aggregating/curating content, in addition to generating original content produced by the team

  • Utilising user insights and behaviour to produce, source, package and distribute content

Requirements / qualifications / skills:

  • Fluent written and spoken English

  • Hindi and Kannada preferred but not mandatory

  • Understanding of Knowledge Management

  • People management - keeping in constant touch with individual team members on phone and email

  • At least 5 years of work experience in digital media. Knowledge / understanding of water preferred.

  • Understanding of and familiarity with technology - Drupal, the open source community, digital media, social media

  • Understanding of building online and offline communities around water and allied issues

  • Must be willing to travel
