The STEPS Centre (www.steps-centre.org) at the University of Sussex, UK, Sarai (CSDS) and Centre for Studies in Regional Development (JNU) are hosting a workshop on 'Peri-urban Futures and Sustainability' on 8th February at the India International Centre, New Delhi
The workshop will highlight the contested nature of the peri urban interface, conflicting administrative, jurisdictional and governance arrangements, tensions between legality and illegality and implications for poverty reduction and social justice for marginal peri-urban dwellers. By using water as a lens of enquiry, it will examine the formal and informal institutions and practices relating to water access and quality, technological systems and feasible trajectories of development.
The workshop will present STEPS; collaborative research in Delhi and peri-urban localities in Ghaziabad. It will also provide an opportunity for a range of stakeholders (policy makers, academics and activists) to explore whether alternative pathways to development and sustainability exist that are more equipped to address the interests and needs of disenfranchised peri urban dwellers.
