Organizer: Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE) - Community Environmental Resource Centre (CERC)
Venue: St.George Parish Hall, Muhamma, Kerala
Description:
We are glad to announce the 4th edition of the Vembanad Fish Count. The Vembanad wetlands foster high biodiversity and substantially support rural livelihoods. The environmental conditions of this lake are in steady decline due to various human activities and have lead to a crisis in livelihoods for dependent communities.
Depletion of fishery resources has changed this 'inland fish basket' to an 'inland waste basket', driving the fisher folks, the primary stakeholder of the lake to a livelihood crisis. Traditionally, conservation and management of the lake resources of Vembanad were vested in the hands of the local communities, and hence, local communities were actively involved in the management of the resources they relied on. With the intention of regaining the participatory methods in lake management, to enhance cooperation between various stakeholders, Govt. departments, NGOs, academic institutions and to create awareness about the state of fishery resources, we are organizing this event on 26th May 2011.
