About the Book

Access to drinking water, sanitation facilities and promotion of hygiene is one of the basic rights guaranteed by the Indian state. Having witnessed its inception in the pre-independence era, attempt towards provision of adequate WASH services remain one of the long-standing commitments of the Government. But given the vastness of the population and socio-cultural fabric that envelops these concepts, a vast majority of populace still remain out of reach. Census 2001 revealed that in our country, there is just one toilet per 15 people. While the figures have improved with the 2011 data, there is no evidence suggesting that the sanitation facilities are regularly used and looked after.

The objective of this book is to contribute towards an evolving body of knowledge in the sector of WASH while keeping the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in view. Innovations have been used to visualize and convert reliable data in order to aid effective decision-making. The proposed score-card, which forms a part of an evolving body of knowledge, is one of the many attempts being currently carried out by social researchers and implementers across the globe, who are aiming to create an environment of effective concurrent monitoring methods for multi-faceted problems.
