Institute of Rural Research and Development (IRRAD) which is an initiative of S M Sehgal Foundation, a Gurgaon, India based NGO working on Integrated Sustainable Village Development model in villages of Mewat, one of the most backward districts of Haryana is organising a JAL CHETNA YATRA on the occasion of World Water Day. The yatra will commence on 19th March simultaneously from three blocks of district Mewat viz. Ferozpur Zhirka, Nagina and Tauru. It will cover apx 50 villages touching 125000 people in a period of three days. Along with pad yatra, meetings with villagers, nukkad nataks (street theatres) and signature campaign of villager’s commitment towards development of water resources will also be organised. The water samples will also be tested by villagers/laboratory to check the potability of drinking water available in villages. The yatras will culminate into a large public meeting at Mewat Development Agency, district headquarter, NUH on 22nd March where district officials including T K Sharma (Commissioner Gurgaon division), Rajendra Singh (Magsaysay award winner and Chairman Tarun Bharat Sangh, Alwar) and other eminent personalities will address the large gathering. A memorandum on water issues of Mewat will also be handed over to district administration by villagers.
The main objective of the program is to sensitize villagers, capacity building and advocacy on water issues. It will help in preparing the communities for taking action so that they can work with IRRAD, government departments and other organisations to solve the water problems of Mewat.
