HIGHLIGHTS
Mapping is an important aspect of development work, helping to visualize spatial features and monitor temporal changes. Most of the social workers and development professionals lack GIS based mapping skills, where as GIS professionals fall short due to limited domain knowledge.
This short skill development course meets the growing need for digital mapping skills among NGO staff and rural development workers. This practice-oriented course covers the following aspects:
- Introduction to Geographical Information System (GIS) and data capturing using Global Positioning System (GPS) tools
- Basic operations of open source QGIS software
- Digitizing paper maps, SoI topo sheets and from Google Earth
- Steps in developing a thematic water map for a given area
After successfully completing this course, participants will be able to develop digital maps, such as, resource maps, contour maps, land-use, forest, spatial trends of health, education facilities and watershed boundary maps using QGIS.
