Nikhil Chandavarkar, Chief of Communication and Outreach for Sustainable Development at the United Nations, will address the conference. The conference shall be based upon new research works being done in order to give water a more sustainable use and its undeniable link with the environment. This conference is coordinated by the main office of the Instituto Cervantes in Madrid in collaboration with the United Nations.
Mr Chandavarkar is charged with the responsibility for dialoguing with the United Nations’ various constituencies on sustainable development issues, including the green economy, climate change and related policy matters. He holds a PhD in economics from Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., where he was also a teaching fellow. Since joining the United Nations in 1979, he has served in Brazil, Colombia, and Paraguay and in management positions in New York. He has advised governments in a variety of countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America, on human development and sustainable development policies.
His recent publications include the book Building the Green Economy: A Guide to the Practice of Sustainable Development. He is a fellow of the Royal Society for Arts, Commerce and Manufacture of London. Nikhil is fluent in Arabic, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish.
