Aquaponics workshop, Proto Village, Bangalore, March 27-30, 2013

AquaponicsVenue

ProtoVillage, about 100km north of Bangalore. The participants will live in the village during the workshop.

What is Aquaponics?

Aquaponics is the natural symbiotic relationship between fish and plants. In this system, the same resources (water and nutrients from the fish waste) get continuously recycled, minimising the use of water.

  • It utilizes only one-tenth the water that conventional gardening requires.
  • Since there is no soil involved, there's no need for fertilizers.
  • As the plants have easy access to abundance of nutrients, there is no inter-plant competition. Therefore it can afford denser plantation per unit area.
  • The solid fish-waste is an excellent fertilizer and can be used to enrich the soil based agriculture.
  • It takes less than an hour per day of monitoring once the system is established.
  • Every bit of the produce is organic by default.
  • Along with the organic vegetables that are raised, batches of fresh water fish can also be harvested from the system.

About the workshop

It will be a hands-on workshop in which the participants will set up a medium scaled aquaponics system that will eventually be scaled up to be enough for the village. Mr Murray Hallam, the pioneer in the science behind aquaponics around the world, will be leading us through the set-up for 4 days.

The workshop will give the participants a first-hand experience in planning, designing, installing and maintaining an aquaponics system, and a personal time with Mr Murray Hallam to discuss commercial aquaponics designs.

This will be very useful for those that are interested in:

1.  Growing dirt-free organic vegetables in their own backyard.
2.  Helping a community become resilient in terms of food security
3.  Setting up a commercial aquaponics system
