Poor sanitation and hygiene is one of the major causes of poor water quality, as  bacterial from human excreta find their way into drinking water or directly into our bodies through unclean hands.

There are many families living in rural areas who have inadequate access to proper sanitation. This leads to many diseases among the rural residents. There is lack of awareness about the benefits of proper sanitation, and in addition, the sanitation infrastructure is inadequate.

Jal Manthan, the  newsletter produced by Water and Sanitation Program, features some of the strategies that were formulated in a workshop. It also reflects the efforts made by different states of India and valuable lessons on rural sanitation.
