System of Wheat Intensification (SWI) in Sutarpur, Ramgarh district, Jharkhand: Experiences of a farmer - An initiative by SISU and SPWD

This video presents the interview of one progressive farmer regarding his experiences with the use of System of Wheat Intensification (SWI) in one of the naxal infested villages namely Sutarpur, of Patratu block of Ramgarh district in Jharkhand. Society for Integrated Social Upliftment (SISU) and Society for Promotion of Wasteland Development (SPWD) had initiated this SWI initiative following the introduction of the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) initiative by SPWD in 2010.

It was found that this initiative met with a highly positive response at the village level and in a year in two cropping seasons, the whole village was converted into SRI village. One of the farmers in the village informed of his experiences with the use of SWI. The farmer informed that the use of SWI had led to increase in production almost by three times, there had been an increase in the size of crops and their problem of food security was solved for about three to six months following the use of this method. Another farmer also informed of the advantages of SRI in the video. He informed that he did not believe first, but after experimenting the villagers found out of the advantages of using SRI and now he actively advised farmers from this and other villages to use this method.
