This Civil Engineering Course under the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) on the broad subject of Structural Analysis, Design, Dynamics and Reliability is being carried out by Indian Institute of Technology’s and the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore as a collaborative project supported by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (Government of India) to enhance the quality of engineering education in the country, by developing curriculum based video and web courses. In these web based lectures, the authors have developed the subject in detail and in stages in a student-friendly manner. The broad group of Structural Analysis, Design, Dynamics and Reliability is structured into modules on the following topics:
Structural Mechanics
This course by IIT Bombay focuses on different analytical tools for understanding the behaviour of primarily, statically determinate structures, and also of indeterminate structures. Analysis of indeterminate structures is further discussed apart from some methods of deflections of structures and usage of applications. The primary objective of the course is to learn how to use the knowledge of mechanics in understanding the behavior of structures. The course serves as an introduction to structural systems, and to methods of analyzing these systems under various loading conditions. Please view the course on NPTEL website here
The lectures on the same course by IIT Bombay is available in the form of video on the NPTEL website here
This course by IIT Kharagpur can be viewed in the form of video lectures at NPTEL website here
Advanced Structural Analysis
This course by IIT Roorkee on Structural Analysis deals with the fundamental concepts and intends to reorganise the analysis tools for plane and space truss/frame in the matrix form so as to make it more meaningful to professionals. Both the flexibility (force) and stiffness (displacement) methods of structural analysis are covered with more emphasis on the latter due to its suitability for computer applications. The flexibility method cannot be ignored as it is often necessary to obtain stiffness through flexibility techniques. While these methods are applicable to discretized structures of all types, only the frame structures have been dealt with in the present course. The course details can be viewed online at the NPTEL website here
The same course is offered by IIT Madras and mainly deals with matrix analysis of structures. It begins with a review of the basic concepts of structural analysis and matrix algebra, and shows how the latter provides an excellent mathematical framework for the former. This is followed by detailed descriptions and demonstrations through many examples, of how matrix methods can be applied to linear static analysis of skeletal structures (plane and space trusses; beams and grids; plane and space frames) by the stiffness method, and also the flexibility method. The course details can be viewed at the NPTEL website here
Advanced Structural Design
This course on Advanced Structural Design by IIT Guwahati covers the fundamental design philosophies of concrete and steel structures. It deals with the design aspects of a few special structures with a view to simulation of realistic behavior as closely as possible. For each type of structure, the modeling and analysis aspects are initially discussed. The underlying design philosophies are emphasized along with the procedure. The categories of structures dealt with in this course are reinforced concrete frame buildings, liquid retaining structures, earth retaining structures, gantry girders, steel railway truss bridges and steel railway plate girder bridges. The details of the course can be viewed at the NPTEL website here
Stochastic Structural Dynamics
This course by IISc Bangalore attempts to develop methods for analysis of structures subjected to dynamic loads that are random in nature. It introduces the application of probability, random variables and random processes to model uncertainties in dynamic loads. The response analysis considers question of propagation of uncertainties in the inputs to the response variables of interest and also considers questions on reliability of vibrating systems under dynamic loads. The details of the course can be viewed at the NPTEL website here
Structural Dynamics
This course by IIT Madras deals with the fundamental concepts of structural dynamics, mathematical formulations for the various structural applications, methods of solutions, nature of the results to be expected, observed behaviour of structural members as well as systems and the current design concepts. The purpose of this course is to impart an understanding of the dynamic behaviour and strength of structural members and to understand related design codes. The details of the course can be viewed at the NPTEL website here
The course offered by IIT Bombay introduces the basic concepts of dynamic loading and the response of structures to such loads, and then uses these concepts to illustrate applications in practical structures. The video lectures of the course can be viewed at the NPTEL website here
Structural Reliability
The course by IIT Bombay introduces the basic concepts of structural reliability so as to perform reliability-based structural analyses/evaluations and reliability-based design code calibrations. Concepts of uncertainty in the estimation of various analysis/design parameters are discussed. Analysis of various uncertainties and their incorporation into analysis and design methods are discussed from the perspective of various levels of reliability-based analysis and design. The course outline can be viewed at the NPTEL website here
Structural Stability
The course on Structural Reliability as offered by IIT Kanpur deals with stability of discrete systems, buckling of columns, buckling of beam-columns and frames, buckling of thin rectangular plates, torsional and lateral-torsional buckling. The course details can be viewed at the NPTEL website here
Reliability Engineering
The course by IISc Bangalore deals with understanding the significance of incorporating uncertainties in design and the use of probability considerations. The course modules can be downloaded from the NPTEL website here
