Software for reservoir analysis – A research report by National Institute of Hydrology

The report describes a software developed by the National Institute of Hydrology (NIH) for reservoir analysis in view of the importance of reservoir operation problem in the Indian context and the non-availability of generalized software for reservoir analysis.

The reservoirs are one of the most important components of water resources development projects in the country and are imperative to utilize the available water resources in an optimal and efficient manner. The efficient use of water resources requires not only judicious design but also proper management and operation policies of the hydraulic structures.

Reservoir operation forms a very important part of the planning and management of water resource systems. A large number of models, both generalized as well as system specific, have been developed during the last two decades. Some popular models include HEC 3 and HEC 5 of Hydrology Engineering Centre, SIMYLD-II of Texas Water Development Board, ACRES, RESER and IRIS.

The software developed by NIH for reservoir analysis takes particular care of the data availability and hydrological conditions in the Indian context. It contains menu driven options for reservoir analysis. The software is capable of presenting the results in a tabular as well as graphical form.  The various modules included in the software for reservoir analysis are:

  • capacity computation using sequent peak algorithm,
  • storage-yield analysis,
  • various methods of reservoir routing,
  • interpolation of elevation-area-capacity table,
  • inflow estimation in the reservoir using the rate of rise information,
  • simulation of hydropower analysis and estimation of firm power,
  • determination of initial trial rule curve levels,
  • stretched thread method of operation and simulation of a multipurpose multi-reservoir system for conservation operation.

Using the simulation analysis, the reliability analysis can be carried out and the operation policy for a system can be refined.
