These images from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite show the coastline along the Pakistan-India border. The top image is from September 23, 2010, and the bottom image is from September 23, 2009.
Both images use a combination of infrared and visible light to increase the contrast between water and land. Vegetation appears bright green. Bare land appears pink-beige. Clouds are pale blue-green. Water ranges in color from bright electric blue to navy. Lighter shades of blue, indicating shallower depth, predominate in 2009, and deeper shades of blue predominate in 2010.
