Health & Sanitation Matters: An introduction to the India Sanitation Portal

India Sanitation Portal

The World Wide Web or the three Ws signify the power of the Internet. Riding on this phenomenon is the India Sanitation Portal (ISP) at www.indiasanitationportal.org, an online platform to catalyse change through knowledge sharing thus leading to improved practices and informed debates.

With a 24*7*365 days of content availability on health & sanitation, the Portal is a rich source of information on various topics introduced recently such as Right to Water and Sanitation, Right to Education clubbed with School Sanitation, India Census 2011, Manual Scavengers, Menstrual Hygiene to name a few. And numbers speak for themselves as the ISP content repository has over 22,000 articles on water, sanitation and hygiene today.

The Portal is also integrated with popular social networking sites. One can follow either through Twitter (http://twitter.com/#!/sanportal) or via Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Sanitation-Hygiene/340130939345477). ISP news feeds can also be accessed directly in your mailbox through the activated RSS option! All these widget icons are available on the left hand side of the India Sanitation Portal homepage.

In the Knowledge and Network Partnership session held at the WSSCC Global Forum on Sanitation and Hygiene in Mumbai 2011, ISP, in collaboration with WaterAid, SuSanA, CREPA, IRC, participated in understanding the existing barriers to knowledge sharing tools, mechanisms that can support collaborative learning effectively and how the web can be a strong medium to propagate information beyond boundaries.

There is no denying the fact that today water and sanitation is on everyone’s agenda and the need to tackle such issues is stronger than ever before. The Portal, therefore, aims to draw on the rich experience of sanitation-sector experts, package their knowledge and add value to it through technology and then disseminate it to a larger audience through the internet.
