Geomorphological study of Devak basin - A research report by National Institute of Hydrology

The study attempts to find out the effects of geomorphology on watershed runoff response in the Devak basin and tries to identify the parameters that are more closely related to runoff. A chief objective of the study is to regionalize the hydrologic models describing the rainfall-runoff process.

The advanced knowledge of geomorphology of the region is of importance in the field of flood control measures and engineering projects, since geomorphological characteristics of river basins in mountainous areas affect runoff processes and formation of floods in the areas.

Parameters of hydrologic model describing rainfall-runoff processes are estimated by optimization techniques using topographical and climatic information of the basin. Various geomorphological parameters, broadly classified as those describing linear & areal aspects of the channel system and the relief aspects of the Devak basin upto Gura Slatian are evaluated.

In the Devak basin there is a lack of a network of hydrogeological observations. The estimated geomorphological parameters of the basin may be used for developing synthetic Geomorphological Instantaneous Unit Hydrograph (GIUH) or for evaluating important hydrologic model parameters, as in the case of Nash model.

In the absence of adequate data, especially in ungauged basins, the measurable geomorphological properties can be applied to synthesize the runoff response of a basin. The study can be used in successful applications of geomorphological characteristics to specific hydrologic studies in a basin.
